Day 119 – Gordons Bay

Day 119 – Gordons Bay

After a great rest day on Monday at the Protea Hotel Seapoint, we were blessed with one perfect winters day for the beautiful run via Camp’s Bay and Hout Bay to Kommetjie. It was a huge highlight to have the charismatic and totally fun New Balance team join me all the way to Camps Bay where we all stopped for cuppacinos. (What a contrast from the West Coast and Kalahari solitude! I felt a bit like the Pied Piper with a trail of supporters behind me!)

It was also a huge surprise and pleasure to have my friend and colleague Dave Pattle of Global Business Solutions (one of my sponsors and my employer) fly to Cape Town to run with me for the day. After the one day of respite we spent the rest of the week running in freezing rain around the peninsula, to Cape Point, via Simonstown and Fishhoek to Muizenberg and along the coast to Gordon’s Bay. Along the way we spent a few days in Scarborough with friends Sandy and Wendy Paterson where Hannah loved having other children to play with. Wendy and I had a great run to Cape Point after which our talk muscles were very tired (a common injury when running with another woman).

I have been very fortunate to have Mark Copson on loan to me from New Balance for the last while – he has been a huge asset, a fun running partner and an able bodyguard. Huge thanks to Gary van Rooyen and the NB team for their amazing enthusiasm and support in Cape Town. What a great team!

We have truly experienced the Cape winter at its most relentless for the last few days and have been hammered by strong winds, rain and freezing cold. After arriving in Gordon’s Bay on Friday, I finally succumbed to the dreaded Cape Town flu and unfortunately Pete, Kirsty, Hannah and I are all sick. We have had to take a few days off to recover but are being looked after by Cliffy Coombe and Tracey Whitelaw and with the help of their tlc and chicken soup we hope to be back on the road again as soon as possible for the final stretch home to the Eastern Cape. On the bright side, being sick also gave us the opportunity to meet Abrie Botma from Rocky Mountain bikes – what a great guy! (And what a great product!).

[noteblock] We will post our new itinerary for the home stretch on the website as soon as possible.[/noteblock]
